Message from the Director of the Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem

Tran Dang Xuan
Director, Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem

It is my great honor to write this message as the representative of the Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem, Hiroshima University.

Hiroshima University collaborates with leading educational institutions worldwide to tackle global issues through academic, technological, and cultural exchange. Its activities within the Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem hold great significance as part of this effort.
In December 2023, Hiroshima University signed an agreement with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) in Vietnam to establish a satellite campus. Then, in October 2024, the Hiroshima University Global Campus Institute Vietnam Office was established within TUAF. These initiatives mark a step towards building closer collaboration between Vietnam and Japan, collaboration which can contribute to the development of both countries.
Furthermore, during the 2023 G7 Summit held in Hiroshima, the meeting between Hiroshima University’s President and the Prime Minister of Vietnam accelerated the expansion of education and research in the fields of smart cities, carbon neutrality, semiconductors, and hydrogen technology, paving the way for joint advancement of future-oriented innovation
Moving forward, plans are underway to construct a similar overseas co-creation ecosystem in Indonesia. These global initiatives taken by Hiroshima University extend beyond mere academic exchange and are poised to contribute significantly to the industrial and social development of all countries involved.

Hiroshima University has produced approximately 400 Vietnamese graduates to date, with alumni associations established in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. We will continue to deepen our collaboration with Vietnamese government agencies, universities, and private companies, welcoming outstanding students while striving even harder to contribute to the development of both Japan and Vietnam.
We are filled with anticipation as we look forward to carrying on our joint journey toward the future of Hiroshima University and Vietnam together with all of you. We sincerely hope you will continue to follow the activities of the Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem.

Faculty Introduction (Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem)

Tran Anh Duc
Associate Professor

I am deeply honored to be a part of the Hiroshima University Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem. Having earned both my master’s and doctoral degrees at Hiroshima University, I am truly delighted to be able to contribute to the further development of my alma mater’s presence and influence in Vietnam.

My areas of expertise are agricultural economics and rural development. To date, I have conducted field research in various regions across Vietnam, gaining a deep understanding of the unique socioeconomic contexts specific to each area.

As a member of this ecosystem, I will do my utmost to support the development of educational programs at Hiroshima University tailored to the needs of Vietnamese students, while also striving to promote exchange between the students, faculty, and staff of Hiroshima University and its partner institutions in Vietnam. Furthermore, I intend to leverage the connections I built through my own study abroad and research experiences to help strengthen the Hiroshima University alumni network in Vietnam. It is my great pleasure to participate in this initiative, and moving forward, I will dedicate myself to promoting fruitful academic and cultural collaboration through the Vietnam Overseas Co-Creation Ecosystem.

Provision of a Doctoral Program Specializing in Agriculture and Food Science in Collaboration with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry

As part of its “Overseas Co-creation Ecosystem” initiative, Hiroshima University is working to strengthen the foundations of education and research in Vietnam. In particular, in 2023, Hiroshima University concluded an inter-university international exchange agreement and an agreement on the establishment of a satellite campus with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry. In 2024, the University further deepened inter-institutional collaboration by establishing the Vietnam Office of the Global Campus Institute and launching a satellite campus.

Building upon this satellite campus, Hiroshima University, in cooperation with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, has been offering a doctoral (late-stage) program specializing in agriculture and food science since October 2024.

This program is designed for residents of Vietnam, with an annual admission capacity of approximately 10 students. Participants can earn a doctoral degree from Hiroshima University while residing in Vietnam. Through the effective use of online platforms, faculty members from Hiroshima University travel to the satellite campus to provide on-site research supervision. In addition, students are given opportunities to conduct experiments utilizing the University’s advanced research facilities through short-term visits to Japan. Furthermore, outstanding students enrolled in this program are eligible for exemptions from the admission fee and tuition. Financial support is also enhanced through scholarship programs and travel expense assistance for study visits, ensuring comprehensive economic support for students.

The University seeks to engage a diverse range of future leaders of Vietnam—including prospective government officials, university faculty members, and corporate researchers—in this program, and through their participation, to continue fostering the next generation of leaders.

This program is also closely aligned with the University’s “Food Security through Livestock Industry Reforms to Improve Nutrition in the South” initiative. This initiative is one of the key priority areas of the “President 5 Initiatives for Peace Sciences — New Peace Sciences (Creating Peace for Safety and Security),” established by Hiroshima University in 2023.
Efforts to improve nutrition and enhance food security through sustainable agricultural and livestock reforms in developing countries, including Vietnam, contribute not only to national development but also to addressing global challenges.
